Car registration Plates and Product Serialization: An Analogy

When the first motor vehicles hit the dusty roads, there was no need to identify any of them, anyone knew the lucky owner of the “motor-horse”, but suddenly after few years the number of vehicles reached the 3 and 4 digits and the necessity to identify each of them bacame a priority.
France was the first country to introduce the registration plates followed by Germany in 1896. The Netherlands was the first country to introduce a nationally registered licence plate in 1898. All remaining countries followed, with U.S since 1903 and UK plates from 1 January 1904.
Since the beginning of the XX century until today we can clearly identify any kind of vehicle by its plate, link the vehicle to the owner and its address.
In case of scheduled maintenance or recalls the owners can be reached easily and in case of theft the stolen vehicle cannot be used; not to mention police bills shipped directly to the vehicle owner.

Could you buy a car or a motorbike without its license number? I honestly doubt it!
Also, why should you buy products with no registration number? Wouldn’t it be better if you could know your products’ origin, features, manufacturing and expiration dates and, moreover, if you could check their validity and history before you purchase them?
Think about what you eat! Do you trust the quality and origin of the food you buy? Do you feel totally safe? What about the garments? Are they original or made with contaminated and low-quality components? What about car spare parts? Counterfeit: A counterfeit good pretends to be the real thing. They bear designer brand's label or signature symbol - such as the interlocking C's on an authentic Chanel handbag or the apple logo of an authentic Apple product.
Knockoff: Knockoffs imitate the overall look of designer originals, but do not use the words or symbols of a designer brand label to deceive consumers. Much of the legitimate fashion industry consists of knockoffs of designer styles.
Pirate: Pirated goods are movies, music, books or other copyrighted works that have been reproduced without permission from the company, composer or author that owns the copyright. Pirated products cost legitimate businesses billions in lost profits and drive up prices.
